Brendan Bullock
Brendan Bullock joins me on the Makers of Maine Behind The Lens Series. I found Brendan on Instagram and shot photos for our Gabriel Frey episode a few months ago. Brendan lives with his family in Bowdoinham, Maine where he has a studio and darkroom attached to his home. He is a documentary photographer, as well as wedding, editorial and portrait but his true passion lies in art photography.
Brendan tells me, “my craft is photography. I've been involved with photography in some form now for over 20 years. For income, I photograph weddings primarily, I make fine artwork, I work with historic photographic processes to make prints for galleries and exhibitions. I've done documentary work that's more kind of like photojournalism for not too much with newspapers, but some editorial magazine, documentary assignments. Then, just personal work. So at any given time, I'm working on one of those, but depending on the time of year, I might be working on one more than the others. Wintertime is kind of my creative time. And summertime is more of my income yet, and I'm trying to find a healthy balance of the two.”
Brendan wasn’t always a Mainer, but now calls it home.
“One of my best friend from college, grew up in Brunswick, Maine. Over the course of him and I knowing each other, I came and visited him in Maine got to know friends of his in Maine. So when I ended up back on the East Coast, I went to visit some mutual friends of ours in Portland and while I was walking down Exchange Street, I saw Daniel Cainy’s gallery, who is now the art critic for the Portland press Herald. He had a hiring sign in the window and I walked in and applied. Interviewed off the street and got the job. I went back to Burlington, Vermont, picked up the car and came to Portland like a week later.”
