33 By Hand is a handmade leather goods brand founded by James McLaughlin in Portland, Maine.
James oversees every aspect of the process — from design and material selection to the final stitch. 33 By Hand
His work draws on his diverse background — growing up in Maine, working in music (recording studios, DJing), and traveling — blending rugged outdoor functionality with refined, contemporary craftsmanship.
The name “33 By Hand” reflects both his age when he launched the brand and his commitment to handcrafting: pieces are made to endure and improve with time.

  • Fletchers Mill

In 1971, brothers Wayne and Earl Fletcher had a vision of owning a business, so on a wing and a prayer they mortgaged their homes and took ownership of an antiquated mill that once served as a blacksmith shop. Many of the simpler items which the Fletcher brothers began manufacturing, including wooden nickels, tool handles and toy parts, are still being made today.

Today, Maine Wood Concepts (parent company of Fletchers’ Mill) is under the sole ownership of Jody Fletcher, and recently celebrated it’s 50th anniversary. The company employs around 65 workers and their family of businesses include Fletchers’ Mill, Maine Wood Turning which specializes in custom wood turnings, moldings and finishing, and Lutz File & Tool Company which makes wooden file handles. From raw logs to the finished product the entire process is done in house and under a watchful eye.

  • From Tree To Finish

At From Tree To Finish we simply do just that. From felling of the tree, to sawing of the log on our sawmill, to the finish product in the woodworking shop.

    Our Process

Timber Harvesting: We selectively harvest trees on our land using sustainable forestry practices.
On-Site Sawmilling: Logs are then milled on our sawmill, capturing the full character of each slab, beam, or board.
Custom Woodshop: In our dedicated shop, we craft everything from live-edge coat racks, shelves, countertops, end tables, coffee tables, charcuterie boards, live edge tables, epoxy river tables and more.
